1. Kayaking Through Crystal Clear Springs

One of the most peaceful yet exciting ways to experience the Nature Coast is by kayak. Florida is home to some of the clearest waters in the country, and nowhere is this more evident than in its famous springs. Kayaking through the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park or Silver Springs is a unique way to immerse yourself in Florida’s natural beauty. Glide past towering cypress trees, watch for playful otters, and marvel at the vibrant underwater ecosystems.

Tip: Launch your kayak from the nearby Nature Coast Escape and paddle down the Weeki Wachee River, one of the most pristine and peaceful waterways in the state.

2. Paddleboarding on the Peaceful Waters

For those looking to up the ante, paddleboarding is an incredible way to explore Florida’s waterways. Whether you’re cruising along the calm waters of the Crystal River or navigating through the tranquil springs, paddleboarding offers a full-body workout while you enjoy Florida’s stunning natural surroundings. The Crystal River is especially famous for its manatee population, and during the colder months, you might even get a chance to paddle alongside these gentle giants!

Pro Tip: If you’re new to paddleboarding, many local outfitters offer rentals and guided tours. Don’t forget to bring your camera—this is an experience you’ll want to remember!

3. Fishing Along Florida’s Scenic Coastlines

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just looking for a relaxing day on the water, fishing on Florida’s Nature Coast is an experience like no other. The area is renowned for its diverse fishing opportunities, from inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico to freshwater fishing in rivers and lakes. You can expect to catch a variety of species such as redfish, trout, and snook.

  • Crystal River: Ideal for both fresh and saltwater fishing.
  • Homosassa River: Known for its abundant marine life.

5. Manatee Viewing at Crystal River

The Crystal River is one of the only places in the world where you can swim with endangered manatees in their natural habitat. During the cooler months (typically from November to March), these gentle creatures flock to the warm waters of the river. Whether you’re kayaking, paddleboarding, or taking a guided tour, you’ll have the chance to see these magnificent animals up close.

Tip: Book a guided manatee tour through local companies who offer the opportunity to see the manatees while keeping a respectful distance. It’s an experience that will leave you in awe.

6. Go Scalloping

Scalloping is one of our family’s favorite Florida adventures to experience during the summertime.

What is scalloping? Scalloping is snorkeling with a goal of spotting and catching bay scallops in shallow-water seagrass beds along the Florida Gulf Coast. Florida scallops are fun to catch and delicious to eat.

Florida scallop season runs from July – September in certain areas along the Florida Nature Coast. Pasco County in Tampa Bay has a shorter scallop season in July.

Top scalloping destinations include Crystal River, Homosassa and Steinhatchee. If you don’t have your own boat, you can book a scalloping charter in one of these areas to experience this Florida adventure. You’ll even find local restaurants that will cook your catch for you.
